When people usually say they are thinking about something (not imagining/daydreaming), is this not the process they are describing? Are they describing something else that takes place?

What other process would you normally expect people to do without the focusing instructions?

This is fascinating. For context, I don't have an inner narrator, and was able for as long as I remember to tell I wasn't my thoughts/they are just objects that pop in/out and can be played with or read.

Part of me wants to applaud and part of me is sad that people don’t already know this. What tragedy ripped their hearts out of their speech? What fear drives them away from their authenticity?
